The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office announced formal murder charges today against 15-year-old Amber Hellesten. The teen is now facing murder, aggravated, and simple assault charges for the alleged stabbing and murder of 14-year-old Azim Chaplin.
Officials say the stabbing on Feb. 11 left Azim clinging to life. He was alive for several days before he died on Sunday. Reports indicate Hellesten allegedly stabbed Azim near the heart with a pocket knife.
According to Philly.com, Hellesten didn’t live far from Azim and teens told the paper, “He preferred to be called “Zeem” and “never got into any trouble.”
Hellesten was orginially charged with attempted murder before the charges were upgraded. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 4.
