David Berkowitz might be one of the 20th Century’s most notorious serial killers, but he now claims that Jesus has forgiven him and set him free. The born-again Jew For Jesus was denied parole once again by the two-person parole board at Sullivan Correctional Facility in New York.Berkowitz was not in attendance for this hearing, which is not unusual. This was his seventh parole hearing since he became eligible in 2002. Berkowitz has not attended any of his parole hearings as a result of his born-again beliefs, citing the freedom be believes was granted to him by Jesus.
For those readers who may not have been around for Berkowitz’s killing spree in 1976-1977, he was captured in August of 1977 after fatally shooting six people and maiming seven others. He gained the “Son of Sam” nickname from letters sent to police and columnist Jimmy Breslin claiming that Sam, his neighbor’s dog, told him to commit the crimes. Berkowitz plead guilty, and in June 1978, he was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Berkowitz claimed that he had been part of a satanic cult which he claimed assisted him during the killings. To date, nobody else has been charged in the murders.
Berkowitz will be up for parole again in 2016.
