An undercover detective is recovering in the hospital after being accidentally shot by his own Lieutenant. The incident went down during a drug sting on Friday morning. KOB said the officer who was shot three times has been identified as Detective Jacob Grant. Although Grant has had three surgeries, and is in critical condition, the Albuquerque Police Department said his condition is improving.
The criminal complaint, according to KRQE News 13, says the two detectives were inside a car parked at a McDonald’s. One undercover cop was in the front, the other in the back. Two suspects who police have identified as Damien Bailey and Edmond Vester had just allegedly sold the undercover officers $60 in meth.
KRQE said one of the officers made a signal for one of the other detectives to come in when something went terribly wrong and Lt. Greg Brachle opened fire on the car. Detective Holly Garcia was also in the vehicle and was hit by shrapnel. The details surrounding the shooting are not mentioned in the criminal complaint, KRQE noted. The station asked Albuquerque Police Chief Gorden Eden why that important information was left out and he told them “The information is still very limited as our investigators from our jurisdictional shooting task force continues to do the interviews.”
Eden also went on to say about his Lieutenant, “As you can imagine he’s devastated.” As of Monday evening, according to KOB, Lt. Brachle still had not been interviewed about the incident.
The two undercover police officers were not wearing protective equipment or body cameras because of operation they were working.
Mayor R. J. Berry told KRQE, “Keep the officer in your prayers, keep the entire department in your prayers. These men and women go out every day, they risk their lives and this another example, an all too frequent example of how dangerous police work can be.”
As for the suspects, they were arrested and currently held on a $30,000 bond. No word if they had any weapons.
