Last Friday, during a heated argument, 22-year-old college student Tyler Ryan Blansit allegedly beat his mother to death.
The unspeakable act happened as the pair fought over Tyler’s failing marks from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he was studying biology.
Tyler reportedly called the cops himself after striking his mother, and after arriving on the scene, officers discovered 45-year-old Sherry Ann Blansit’s body in the backyard. The cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma to the head. The murder weapon is said to be a baseball bat, and is being tested by forensics.
Tyler, an only child, wasn’t initially arrested for the death, but after continued questioning by deputies, he confessed to attacking her. According to CNN, officers noted scratches on Tyler when they arrived at the home.
The student’s father was at work at the time of the attack, which Mentone, Ala., Police Chief Brad Gregg described as “brutal.”
Sheriff Jimmy Harris agreed, telling WAFF.com: “It’s just one of those things you can’t explain; we’ll never be able to explain what went through his mind, why he snapped and did this.”
Blansit is being charged with murder and is currently being held without bond at DeKalb County Detention Center.
