Getting dumped sucks. But it might suck a tiny bit more to be dumped for Miss Ohio 2012. At least, that’s what Shayna Hubers, now 24, seemed to think three years ago when she shot her on-again, off-again beau, Ryan Poston, six times through the head, killing him. Prosecutors claimed she did it in a fit of jealous rage; she claimed she did it in self-defense after he violently attacked her.
Hubers, a former honors student, was convicted of the murder in April, and is currently awaiting sentencing.
According to the Daily Mail, on the night of his death, Ryan Poston, a 29-year-old lawyer, was planning to break up with Hubers. The two had been seeing each other off and on for about a year before he died. But he’d been losing interest, and had told his dad he already had a date lined up with a young woman named Audrey Bolte (aka Miss Ohio 2012) for that very night, October 12, 2012.
According to the Daily Mail, Hubers was disheartened about the faltering state of their relationship, writing to a friend, “He says he is only with me [because] I make him feel so awful when I cry. My love has turned to hate.” She also reportedly sent a foreboding text to another friend before she and Poston went to a shooting range one day: “’When I go to the shooting range [with] ryan tonight I want to turn around and shoot and kill him and play like [it’s] an accident.”
What, exactly, happened at Poston’s Kentucky condo on the night of his death doesn’t look much like an accident, however (it didn’t, at least, to the jury that convicted Hubers). When the young woman, then 21, called 911 to report shooting her beau, she told the dispatcher, “Ma’am, I killed my boyfriend,” per the Daily Mail. When cops arrived, they found Poston’s body crumpled on the floor under a table, blood everywhere.
Hubers’ behavior got weirder and weirder after she went in to talk to police that night, according to reports. She told cops, “He’s very vain … He wants to get a nose job … I gave him his nose job he wanted. I broke it.”
In the investigation room, Hubers continued being, um, exceedingly honest, asking if she could still keep a cell phone in prison and noting, “I don’t know if anyone will ever want to marry me if they know that I killed a boyfriend in self-defense.” She also reportedly did a little dance routine while snapping her fingers.
Regarding that supposed self-defense claim: Hubers said she shot Poston after her boyfriend “pushed her down against the arm of the couch and threw her against furniture.”
She’s now facing life in prison, and will be sentenced on June 15.
