Ex-Cop Charged With Raping 13 Women Is One Of Hundreds Of Officers Who Lost Badges For Sex Crimes

Jury selection continues Tuesday for a former Oklahoma City Police officer who is facing dozens of counts of raping women and for burglary.

KOCO says Daniel Holtzclaw is accused of raping 13 women while on duty. He was finally arrested in August 2014 for the alleged crimes after his department built a case against him.

Holtzclaw was a police officer assigned to the Spring Lake Division of the Oklahoma City Police department for three years prior to his arrest. Prior to joining the police force, the tall, athletic, Holtzclaw was a football star in his own community. He had high hopes of taking his football career to the next level, but instead of pursuing his dream of becoming a football star, he joined the police force. It was his time on the force that allegedly led him down a dark path.

A departmental investigation uncovered many of the women claim Holtzclaw forced them to perform oral sex on traffic stops, but that wasn’t the only place the assaults occured. The AP conducted a large investigation into this case, and the cases of many other police officers across the country who have been accused of the same types of crimes.

The AP says in its yearlong investigation of sexual misconduct by law enforcement in the United States they found 1,000 officers who lost their police powers and badges in a six-year period. All for rape, sodomy and other types of sexual assaults. You can read the results of their full report here.

As for Holtzclaw’s case, things really broke open on June 18, 2014, when a victim named J.L. filed a report and Oklahoma City sex crimes detective Kim Davis took notice. The accusations from that victim, a woman in her 50s, made Davis curious about another unresolved report filed by another victim just weeks prior against Holtzclaw, the AP reported. From there, the investigation launched into full gear.

The AP says that by the time the investigation concluded, detectives assigned to the case had put together a six-month narrative of alleged sex crimes against Holtzclaw starting the year prior in 2013 right around Christmas.

Police Chief Bill Citty told KOCO, “Traffic stops, some of the individuals were actually just walking. Walking in their neighborhood and they were stopped, you know, searched, threatened in some way with arrest or something to that extent. And as a result of that, actually coerced them into providing sexual favors to him.”

Holtzclaw was initially out on bond after his arrest, but he violated that agreement over the summer. KOCO says his ankle monitor went dead, he was required by the court to keep it charged, so he was locked up.

Despite the charges, the impending trial and the victims coming forward, Holtzclaw has maintained his innocence.

Power corrupts. Sickening, but not surprising unfortunately. Imagine the number of rapes/sexual assaults that aren’t reported.
