Trainer Sentenced To Five Years For Knowingly Infecting Ex-Girlfriends With HIV

An HIV-positive fitness trainer is now serving five years behind bars for knowingly infecting two former girlfriends with the disease.

Simon James, a 46-year-old man in the United Kingdom, was found guilty of two counts of grievous bodily harm by recklessly transmitting HIV back in the fall, India TV reports. He reportedly claimed he was allergic to latex and that condoms wouldn’t fit, so he refused to wear them, according to the Telegraph.

In the mid-nineties, James contracted the disease, the report says. He was supposed to be taking medication to help prevent the spread, but that wasn’t the case.

With the first girlfriend, according to the report, he came clean and told her he was HIV positive. He also lied and said he was under a doctors care and taking the proper meds. Their sex life continued as normal, but James was far from telling the truth. They broke up, and very soon afterward, James began dating a new woman.

During that relationship, according to the report, she had no idea he was carrying the disease until his ex-girlfriend reportedly came to her and told her he had HIV.

After confronting him, he told the young woman he was not infectious. That was a lie, and both women were subsequently infected with HIV. They must now take medications for the rest of their lives.

India TV reports that, during both relationships, James was not going to the doctor or taking any medications. At trial, Simon’s lawyer claimed he had bipolar disorder and a personality disorder and was now taking medications.

The judge wasn’t swayed, though, sentencing him to 2.5 years for each woman’s case and saying, “You were well aware of what you were doing and went ahead and did it for your own personal satisfaction. What you did Mr James was quite dreadful and the consequences will be lived by others, not you.”
