Olivia Newton-John’s Ex, Who Vanished 10 Years Ago, Possibly Spotted Alive In Mexico

Olivia Newton-John's Missing Ex Boyfriend Maybe Found

Well, this is nuts. In June 2005, the actress Olivia Newton-John, best known for playing Sandy in Grease, reported that her boyfriend of nine years, Patrick McDermott, had vanished during an overnight fishing trip in San Pedro, California. None of the other 22 passengers reported seeing him fall overboard or leave the boat, yet three years later, when he still hadn’t been found, the Coast Guard concluded that he had to have drowned. Well, it’s 2016, and according to an investigator named John Nazarian, McDermott has been living in Mexico this entire time. What?!

Nazarian, speaking to Australia’s Women’s Day magazine (via the Daily Mail), alleged, “It’s rumored [McDermott] was with a German national. I spoke to people there [in Mexico]. The girl he was traveling with was described as having a German accent. … To come up with the conclusion that he fell off the boat, and allegedly no one saw him fall off the boat, is the most preposterous thing I’ve ever heard in my life.”

At the time of McDermott’s disappearance, he owed his ex-wife, Yvette Nipar, $8,000 in back child support for their son Chance, and had some other outstanding debts as well. The prevailing theory was that McDermott might have killed himself or faked his death in order to allow his son to collect $100,000 from his life insurance policy. The strangeness surrounding his disappearance, not to mention a lack of a body, led investigators to delay pronouncing him legally dead for years.

Nazarian is not the first to suggest McDermott is still alive and living in Mexico. A 2010 Dateline episode proposed a similar theory, with investigators alleging that the Korean-American man was living near Puerta Vallarta, Mexico, under his birth name, Patrick Kim. They even made contact with the man believed to be McDermott, with investigators saying at a press conference, “Mr. McDermott’s wishes, according to his counsel, is not to be ‘hounded’ any longer by investigators or the media.”

Newton-John, meanwhile, has moved on with her life and has since gotten married. Still, it must be difficult living with the possibility that your former boyfriend faked his death and has been tanning on the beach for the last 10 years.
