Florida Teen Filmed Having Sex With Possibly 25 Boys In School Bathroom Is A Sex Trafficking Victim

When a 15-year-old girl at South Fort Myers High admitted to police last week that she’d had sex with “multiple male students” in one of the school’s bathrooms after hours, a controversy ensued, eventually capturing national attention.

According to police, 25 male students were identified going into that bathroom during the hour that the girl said she was inside. One student told reporters that some of the males were members of the school’s football team. To make matters worse, videos of the illicit activities were rumored to be circulating among the students on Snapchat.

However, as the minimum age of consent in Florida is 16, every male 16 or older who did could face charges of statutory rape. Even sharing any of the Snapchat videos could get students in legal trouble for possible child pornography. The school system has assured parents that it has already disciplined many of the male students involved in what they called “inappropriate activities,” but there are still no arrests. The girl’s mother has thus far been reluctant to press charges, but police are still investigating the matter.

The whirlwind of judgment that surrounded the girl in the days that followed prompted the girl’s mother to contact local reporters, and now there are even more details about the tragic circumstances that led up to the disturbing incident. According to her mother, the girl was a runaway who ended up in the hands of a sex trafficker when she was only 13, and was held captive and severely sexually abused for two years before being rescued.

Megan Estrem of Be the Light, an advocacy group that helps the victims of sex trafficking (including the girl in question), said, “What’s upsetting about this, is this behavior is not uncommon for human-trafficking victims.”

The victim had reportedly sought treatment for the specific ramifications and psychological toll of such longterm trauma. According to her mother, she had just been through an eight-month treatment program and had been back in school for only two weeks when the incident occurred. According to her mom, the girl had gone to the boy’s bathroom to talk to a guy she had a crush on. That boy reportedly asked her for sex, and the girl agreed. Another boy entered the bathroom, and then others, though it’s unclear just how many of those boys participated in any sexual acts.

“She was not equipped to make a stable, rational decision in that situation,” said Estrem, emphasizing that the girl “did not sleep with 25 boys in the bathroom – there was only a handful that she did sleep with. In this case, it was more of a spectator sport.”

Estrem went on: “She has been in an environment where she has been told to behave a certain way, and there were severe consequences if she didn’t.”

For the time being, the girl’s mother has pulled her from the school. We sincerely hope this girl gets the help and support she needs, and that the boys involved in this incident — which goes far beyond “inappropriate activities” — get more than a slap on the wrist.
