According to police, Carrie Weller and her two sons, Corry and Shane, were arrested after an alleged racially-motivated attack at a lake southwest of Chicago turned into a near-drowning that was reportedly laced with racist slurs.
Reports indicate that the victim, a biracial Black teenager whose name is being withheld because of his age, was at a campground near Canton, Illinois, over the weekend swimming with friends. According to reports, Corry and Shane Weller allegedly began beating up the teenager and yelling racist epithets while the attack occurred, all while Carrie Weller allegedly egged them on with such lovely encouragement as “Kill that n****r!”.
Fortunately, an onlooker got the attack on cell phone video. Midway through the beating, the teenager ended up back in the water, where the attackers reportedly began holding his head under the surface in what’s been called an attempted drowning. Miraculously, the boy managed to escape the entire attack with only minor injuries and did not require medical attention.
The Wellers – 42-year-old Carrie, her 21-year-old son Corry, and her 19-year-old son Shane – were each initially charged with aggravated battery. Charges of mob action and commission of a hate crime followed as police continued their investigation. It’s not clear as of this posting why attempted murder charges have not yet been filed, and it’s also not clear if they might be expected. According to a Facebook posting from the City of Canton Police Department, as of midnight this morning, the terrible trio are still in the custody of the Fulton County Jail.
