Kala Brown, 30, and Charlie Carver, 32, were first reported missing from their Anderson, South Carolina, home shortly after Brown’s last communication with a close friend on August 31. Carver’s mother told police that she hadn’t gone a day without communicating with her son in some way, so really grew concerned when she hadn’t heard from him for several days.
She called the manager of the apartment complex where Brown and Carver lived and asked if she could check on them. The manager knocked on the door, but nobody answered. Concerned, she was allowed to go inside the apartment. At least one report indicates that the apartment door was unlocked, which made what she found on the inside all the more disturbing. It looked as though nobody had been home for several days. Even more troubling was that Brown’s beloved Pomeranian dog had been left in the apartment with no food or water. She told authorities that Brown treated that dog as if it were her child. She would not have left him without food or water, period.
Some of their important medications had been left behind, as well as Brown’s contact lenses and glasses. While Brown’s car remained in the apartment-complex parking lot, Carver’s car was missing. The white Pontiac Grand Prix has yet to be found. According to reports, Brown and Carver had moved in together over the past summer after dating for several months. Carver was still in the process of divorcing his wife when he disappeared. Police have been unable to find any activity coming from either of their cell phones since their disappearance. The last known photo of Carver is from a security camera and shows him leaving his place of work on August 31. He has not been seen since.
The twist in the story comes from Facebook. Shortly after their disappearance, strange and unusual posts began showing up on Carver’s Facebook page. Dozens of posts and comments in the month of September were enough to make family and friends believe that Carver’s page had been hacked. A posting from September 1 declared that Carver and Brown had married. In at least one comment that came from Carver’s account, the poster asks how another poster knew “my hubby,” raising the suspicion that Carver’s ex-wife was the one posting under his name.
Friends and family of Carver have told authorities that the posts are very different from the ones normally made by Carver. The families are worried that the fact that there are posts appearing on Carver’s page after he was reported missing may lead casual observers to believe that the couple have been found, when that’s far from the case.
Police are still investigating, and one of the few leads they have found so far is someone that friends and family have reported as having been a problem in the past. It’s not entirely clear from reports if that person is Carver’s ex-wife.
