Murder Charges for Mom Who Strangled Baby With Holiday Lights, Blamed It On Her Toddler

Kristen Marie DePasquale [Seminole County Jail]

Oviedo, Florida, mom Kristen Marie DePasquale, 27, faces a first-degree murder charge in the November 10 death of her one-year-old daughter, Mia Rice.

The charge comes after DePasquale initially said she found the baby hanging by her neck from a string of pumpkin Halloween lights, and that her two-year-old son was responsible.

DePasquale first told investigators that she left her two children alone in the living room to watch television while she took a shower. Afterward, she claimed, she heard the boy apologizing for hurting his sister, whereupon she discovered Mia’s body and called 911.

According to an Oviedo Police Department press release: “Detectives discovered there were multiple inconsistencies in DePasquale’s statements. Additionally, the medical examiner ruled the death a homicide by strangulation and informed detectives the injuries appeared to be a result of more force than the slightly older brother could have made.”

Detective Christopher George noted that the shower stall was dry, DePasquale had makeup on, and her feet were dirty. The towel by the shower was also dry.

DePasquale is held without bond at the Seminole County Jail. She has refused to take a drug test. A motive at this point has not been revealed.
