WINSTON-SALEM, NC — A woman claims her family was maced by a mall elf last week after she took her three-year-old daughter to meet Santa.
Elsie Brooks brought her daughter Ileighana; her mother, Selma Brooks; and her friend, Christina MacDonald to the Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.
Elsie claims that the drama started when one of Santa’s helpers screamed at her mother to stay behind the line in a very aggressive manner — so they tried to snap a photo of the worker in order to file a complaint later. “Did Santa’s elf really just come out after us?” she said.
“It was very, very sad to see someone at the mall, at the Santa place, being that rude,” Selma said. After the elf maced them, Selma said, “My face was on fire. My eyes, somewhat, still burn.”
Police have charged Shannon Athena Watkins, 33, with two counts of simple assault. Watkins was also suspended from her job, according to a statement issued by Cherry Hill Photo Enterprises, the company operating the Santa experience.
