FERNDALE, CA — A Northern California mother has been accused of trying to kill her daughter after an exorcism she performed on the 11-year-old girl nearly resulted in the child’s death.
Kimberly Felder, 45, of Ferndale, was on the beach shoveling handfuls of sand down her daughter’s throat when she was interrupted by a Good Samaritan, according to the Sacramento Bee. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office stated that the stranger, John Marciel, wrestled Felder to the ground as she pounded the girl in the head with a piece of driftwood.
Police had responded to a 911 call reporting that Felder was attempting to perform a religious ritual on her daughter. After they later arrested her, she told police that she “was trying to remove the demons from the child.”
“If it were not for the intervention and heroic actions of John Marciel, it is very likely that the child would have been killed by Felder,” the sheriff’s office said in the press release.
During the attack, the girl was viciously struck, bitten, and choked, and she was reportedly taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries that included severe damage to an ear. Felder has been hit with a string of charges including attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, felony child abuse, and aggravated mayhem.
