Patty Columbo: The Teen Who Slaughtered Her Family To Keep Having Kinky Sex

ELK GROVE, ILLINOIS — On July 1, 1977, a jury declared 19-year-old Patricia “Patty” Columbo and her 39-year-old lover Frank DeLuca guilty in the previous year’s bloodbath slaying of Columbo’s father, mother, and 13-year-old brother.

Both defendants received sentences of 200 to 300 years behind bars. If the punishment seems extreme, consider the crime.

In May 1976, Patty and DeLuca snuck into the former’s childhood home in the upscale Chicago suburb of Elk Grove, armed with a .32-caliber handgun. DeLuca first confronted Patty’s father, Frank Columbo, 43, and shot the man as he attempted to run upstairs to protect his wife and son. As Frank lay dying, Patty finished the job by bludgeoning her dad with a bowling trophy and leaving it sticking up out of his skull.

Next, the homicidal pair located Mary Columbo, Patty’s 41-year-old mother, cowering in a bathroom. DeLuca blasted Mary square between the eyes, after which Patty slit her mom’s throat.

Finally, Patty woke up her sleeping brother Michael. They forced the boy to stand at attention as DeLuca shot him dead. Patty then stabbed her brother’s body 87 times with a pair of sewing scissors, to the point that police initially thought the kid had measles — until they realized all those little red, oozing marks were puncture wounds.

Before leaving, Patty and DeLuca cranked the home’s furnace to 97 degrees, believing the heat would speed up the process of decomposition. Among dumb ways to attempt to dispose of evidence, that ploy ranks high .

To make the murders seem like gang violence or druggies gone wild, then, Patty and DeLuca dumped the family’s 1972 maroon Thunderbird in a crime-ridden neighborhood on Chicago’s west side.

Three days later, an Elk Grove police officer dropped by the Columbo residence to say the seemingly stolen car had been found. The front door was ajar, and multiple newspaper deliveries had piled up on the front porch.

Stepping inside, the cop happened upon what investigators later deemed a “slaughterhouse.”

What could have motivated this level of rage and sadistic abandon? It’s a tale as old as parents and teenagers themselves: Patty’s parents disapproved of her boyfriend and told her to stop seeing him. The details from there, however, did prove to be unique.

In 1973, Patty Columbo dropped out of high school and got a job peddling makeup at a local Walgreen’s. Once there, she fell hard for Frank DeLuca, then 36, a married father of five who worked at the same store as a pharmacist.

DeLuca returned the affection. Rather than leaving his wife and kids for the 16-year-old, though, he actually moved Patty in to the family home. DeLuca turned out to be quite the sexual adventurer, and he was deeply enmeshed in the suburban “swingers” lifestyle of the 1970s.

In Patty, DeLuca found an equally ambitious (albeit initially underage) partner when it came to explorations of unconventional sex. He also promised to manage her career as an up-and-coming teen model.

In the company of DeLuca, Patty engaged in sex with countless men and women during “group gropes” that were both organized and spontaneous. She even proudly showed off an 8mm film DeLuca made of her having sex with his German shepherd.

Back at home, Frank Columbo, Patty’s “old school Italian” father, hit the roof the moment he learned of the relationship. He and Mary initially attempted to stop Patty from having any contact with DeLuca, but it proved impossible.

After a year of living with DeLuca, though, Patty returned to her father. She told him she’d had enough and just wanted a place of her own. Frank then rented an apartment for Patty and all seemed well until he discovered the new place had transformed into kink central station for DeLuca’s network of Midwest swingers.

So Patty had never broken up with DeLuca, nor had she intended to — he just wanted Frank to finance a lust nest for them. This realization did not sit well with her father.

Frank ended up surprising Patty and DeLuca in a parking lot. He brandished a .22-caliber rifle and informed them he was declaring the relationship over. To punctuate the pronouncement, Frank smashed DeLuca in the mouth with the butt of the gun, spitting his lip and knocking out a few teeth.

The couple immediately filed assault charges, and Frank did a quick stay in jail. Upon getting released, Frank said he’d be cutting Patty out of his will. Alas, Patty was really counting on the old man’s money. As a result, in 1975, she and DeLuca reached out to find “hit men” who would bump off the Columbos and thereby speed up Patty’s inheritance process.

Patty met with used-car salesman Lanny Mitchell and Cook County Civil Services employee Roman Sobcynski in a scummy motel bar called the Where Else Lounge. She offered the duo $20,000 and unlimited sex if they’d kill her family at Christmastime, so it would seem like a gift coming directly from her.

Mitchel and Sobcynski readily agreed and reportedly took Patty up most enthusiastically on her sex promise for the next few months. By the time spring rolled around, though, it became clear that the only thing the duo could be capable of killing were cheap cocktails down at the Where Else.

On May 4, Patty and DeLuca mounted the Columbo family execution themselves.

Detectives who attended the Columbos’ funeral immediately took note of Patty’s odd and inappropriate behavior. She showed up in a shockingly sexy outfit, made loud jokes, and blatantly flirted with the cops. She did also make sure to occasionally scream and cry and theatrically throw herself atop the coffins.

Under questioning, Patty stated her father had Mafia ties. He didn’t. None of her stories, in fact, held up. Eight days after the carnage, then, police arrested Patty for the murders of her mother, brother, and father. About six weeks later, they nabbed Frank DeLuca as well.

Despite limited physical evidence during the trial, multiple witnesses built a convincing case against the couple, including a few Walgreens employees who said they saw Frank burning bloody clothes shortly after the killings. The jury did not take long to convict.

After the multi-century sentence came down, Frank offered his cellmate $10,000 to arrange a hit on two of those witnesses. The cellmate immediately ratted him out. Hiring professional assassins was simply not this couple’s strong suit.

Even behind bars, Patty’s sexual proclivities proved impossible to tamper down. In 1979, she got busted for organizing prison orgies and pimping out her fellow inmates to guards and other authority figures. The ensuing scandal took out multiple officials, including the warden of her Dwight, Illinois, facility.

Wherever Patty Columbo goes, clearly, she goes hard.

Do you folks need an editor? Seriously, I’d work cheap. The quality of what you print is inexcusable. Just proof read it once, maybe by someone other than that who quickly regurgitated out a few Wikipedia entries. Do you have no pride in what you do?
