RALEIGH, NC — A young pastor in North Carolina has been charged with murder after claiming that he drank too much cough medicine, and stabbed his wife to death in his sleep.
Matthew Phelps, 28, told a 911 operator in Raleigh early Friday that he fell asleep after taking too much medicine and may have accidentally killed his wife, according to ABC 13.
When he woke up, Phelps said, he was horrified to find the body of his wife, Lauren Ashley-Nicole Phelps, 29, drenched in blood.
The couple had reportedly been married for around a year.
“I had a dream and then I turned on the lights and she’s dead on the floor … I have blood all over me and there’s a bloody knife on the bed. I think I did it. I can’t believe this,” Phelps told the dispatcher in a recording that was made public by police.
He told dispatchers he took the cough medicine Coricidin because he has trouble sleeping. At the end of the call, which lasted seven minutes, Phelps sobbed to the operator and said his wife didn’t deserve what happened.
The makers of the drug told ABC that there is no evidence to suggest that their product is associated with violent behavior.
Raleigh police charged Phelps with murder on Friday after finding his wife dead from multiple stab wounds. As police continue their investigation, Phelps is currently being held without bond.
