GREENWICH, CT — CrimeFeed brought you the news of the “Beefcake Bandit” in May of this year — and now he’s pleaded guilty of his crimes. David Byers, who once posed for romance novel covers, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to robbing a bank and gas station in Greenwich, Connecticut.
Byers, a 35-year-old part-time fitness model from San Diego, will face up to 20 years in jail at his sentencing on January 18.
According to the U.S. Justice Department, Byers robbed a Gulf gas station in Nesconset, New York, of $300 on April 19, wearing a bandanna over his face and displaying what appeared to be the grip of a handgun.
On April 20, he robbed a Chase Bank branch in Stony Brook, New York, of $2,107 — and also displayed what appeared to be a handgun during the robbery of a Cos Cob service station.
Authorities said that they believe Byers is also behind a string of robberies on Long Island, New York, in April before he came to Greenwich. Greenwich police apprehended Byers in Southern California on May 2 following a cross-country manhunt.
During his time working as a model, Byers posed for the covers of four romance novels, was known for his “bad boy” look, and became a hit on Instagram.
Byers has previous charges in California for burglary and driving while intoxicated, according to court records. According to Michael Stokes, a photographer who has worked with Byers extensively, Byers “has a look that makes women want to rehabilitate him.”
