RIVERSIDE, IL — Police in a Chicago suburb arrested a woman passed out in her running vehicle at a gas station and have deemed her “one of the worst DUI offenders in the United States.”
Tasha Lynn Schleicher, 41, of New Hope, Minnesota, had reportedly fallen asleep while parked next to the station’s kerosene pump. She had attempted to fill her car’s tank with kerosene, rather than gasoline.
Officers said Schleicher seemed extremely intoxicated, smelled strongly of alcohol, and appeared “in total disarray, not wearing shoes, and her clothes were literally falling off her.” She also had an open container of Crown Royal on the seat next to her (police issued a photo of the bottle).
Schleicher reportedly told police she had been looking for her 11 children, who were nowhere in the area. She also said she dropped off her 15-year-old son in Indiana for spring break so he could “party.”
After Schleicher refused to take a field sobriety test, officers arrested her on suspicion of DUI. Upon bringing Schleicher in, authorities learned that she had previously been arrested 11 times — six times for DUI offenses in six different states, including California, Kentucky, Indiana, Minnesota, Oregon, and Wisconsin. She also had three outstanding warrants.
In addition, Schleicher really does have 11 children, but the state of Minnesota took them from her due to issues regarding her drunk and impaired driving.
While in custody, Schleicher said she was bleeding and suffering a miscarriage. Police took her to an emergency room, where a pregnancy test determined she was lying.
Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel told the press:
“This is one of the worst impaired driving arrests our agency has ever made … I’ve classified her as one of the worst DUI offenders in the United States … When she was arrested in a state, she would just not show up in court unless she was held in custody … In Minnesota, she was arrested with children in the car, and alleged to have been breastfeeding one child while driving intoxicated.”
Weitzel added that Schleicher was “combative” with officers and lied about her name, her age, and her social security number. He also said her claim about having a miscarriage was an attempt to escape custody. Schleicher was not positively identified until she was fingerprinted.
At present, Schleicher is being held on two counts of felony aggravated drunk driving, two counts of misdemeanor drunk driving, not having vehicle insurance, driving with a revoked license, and transportation of open alcohol while driving.
