BOYNTON BEACH, FL — Police are asking the public for help to identify a newborn baby found dead on Friday in the ocean near the Florida coast.

An off-duty firefighter found the female infant Friday afternoon while boating on the Atlantic Ocean side of the Boynton Beach Inlet around 1 P.M. on June 1, according to a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office press release.

The sheriff’s office says the infant was less than two weeks old.

Detectives said that they do not know how long the baby was in the water, and have not determined a cause of death. It’s also not known yet whether the infant was alive or dead when placed in the water. Authorities are waiting for the medical examiner’s office to perform an autopsy in order to find more answers.

Police have released an artist’s rendition of the baby and have appealed to the child’s parents — or anyone who knows the family or has any other information — to come forward.
