LAKELAND, FL — A father and his girlfriend have been charged in connection with the fatal beating of a six-year-old girl in Lakeland, Florida.
Larry Lewis Golden, Jr., 26, and Breonna Breshay Wren, 21, have been charged with first-degree murder, aggravated manslaughter of a child, and aggravated child abuse in the death of little Honesty Curry. The girl, who had been left in the care of her father for the summer, died last Thursday at Tampa General Hospital, according to court records.
Two days before her death, Golden called Lakeland Police and claimed that he had found Honesty unresponsive. When paramedics arrived, they found that the little girl’s body was covered with bruises, and reported that she had what appeared to be bite marks on her inner thigh.
Honesty was later found to also have a crushed skull, brain swelling, and a crack in her skull that traveled from ear to ear, according to the arrest affidavit.
Golden and Wren initially told detectives that Honesty’s injuries were the result of falls she had taken in the home. But Wren reportedly later admitted to authorities that she had hit Honesty in the buttocks with a leather belt as punishment.
The child-protection team got more details when they interviewed Golden’s four-year-old daughter. The girl told them that she had seen Wren punch Honesty in the face, stomach, and eye. She said that Wren, who is currently seven-months pregnant, was mean to Honesty and treated her differently than the two young children she shares with Golden.
On June 13, police searched the couple’s residence, according to court records. According to the affidavit, they found “significant evidence that the interior of the residence had been cleaned prior to first responders entering the apartment,” with “cleaning products including Clorox beach” and “wet floors” — along with “numerous areas of visible suspected blood.”
The four-year-old daughter is with her mother, and the two children shared by Golden and Wren are reportedly in the care of the state Department of Children and Families.
Golden and Wren are being held in the Polk County Jail without bond.
