ENCINITAS, CA — Former NFL star Kellen Winslow, Jr., has been arrested and charged with a string of sex attacks in the community of Encinitas, California.

Winslow, Jr., 34, pleaded not guilty to charges of rape, kidnapping, and other crimes in a San Diego court on Friday, according to court records. The charges involved five victims who ranged in age from 54 to 86 years old.

Winslow, Jr.’s wife, Janelle, issued a joint statement with his parents defending him in which they indicated that he is innocent of the sexual assault, misconduct, kidnapping, and burglary charges against him.

It read:

On behalf of our son and my husband, we want to reiterate our love, support, and affection for him during this difficult process,” the statement reads. “We will always be there for him and we know the true facts will come out.”

Deputy District Attorney Dan Owens claimed that the first alleged victim was a 54-year-old woman who had been hitchhiking when she accepted a ride from Winslow in March, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.  The victim stated that Winslow, Jr. told her, after driving her to a remote location, that “if she screamed, he would murder her” and then he raped her, Owens said in court.

Winslow Jr. was also charged with indecent exposure in connection with a 55-year-old victim, this time for an incident that allegedly occurred in May.

Winslow Jr. has also been charged with burglary with the intent to rape a 71-year-old woman in June and burglary with the intent to rape an 86-year-old woman that same month.

The former player was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 2004, and despite a series of injuries that threatened to derail his career, the 34-year-old became one of NFL’s best tight ends during his time in the league.

He has a previous arrest from 2014, for drug possession of synthetic marijuana, for which he received a conditional discharge.

He was initially arrested this time after a woman noticed him, shirtless, coming out of her 86-year-old neighbor’s mobile home at around 2:30 P.M. on June 7. When the neighbor asked what he was doing there, he claimed to looking for his dog. “I go, ‘What dog?’ ” she says. He replied, “A red dog, Clifford.”

Winslow Jr. was charged with burglary, and his representative insisted that there had been a misunderstanding — but the incident was reportedly a crucial clue for police. A few days later, Winslow Jr. was charged in connection with several sexual attacks from March to May 2018 on women in Encinitas.

He is reportedly being held without bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 25 in San Diego County Superior Court.
