SOUTH BEACH, FL — An armless street artist has been arrested in South Beach after allegedly stabbing a tourist with a pair of scissors.Miami Beach police say that Jonathan Crenshaw, 46, also known as “Birdman,” attacked Cesar Coronado, 22, on Tuesday, shortly after midnight.
Crenshaw, who is homeless, is a local fixture, known for painting canvases on Lincoln Road Mall with his feet, according to the Miami Herald.
According to the arrest report, Crenshaw said that he was lying down when Coronado approached him and punched him in the head — so he stabbed Coronado twice in order to defend himself. But after Miami Beach officers found Coronado lying on the ground bleeding, he and his friend both told police that he had merely been asking Crenshaw for directions.
“I just said, ‘do you know where this is?’ but as soon as I talked, the only thing he reacted was — he just cut me,” Coronado said.
Coronado was taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated for his wounds.
Crenshaw reportedly has a criminal past that includes arrests for trespassing, disorderly intoxication, vandalism, and battery on police officers.
In 2011, Crenshaw told Miami New Times that he has fathered children with many women, including singer Gloria Estefan. Crenshaw told the paper that Estefan has given birth to 200 of his children. He also claimed that his mother had fed him rat poison, and told the reporter, “I think I’m the one Nostradamus predicted nobody could kill.”
Crenshaw is being held at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on $7,500 bond. His next court date is set for July 18.
