Laurence “Kirk” Nurmi, the court-ordered attorney who spent six years defending notorious Arizona boyfriend-slayer Jodi Arias, is presently undergoing cancer treatment. And he is also coming right out and blaming his illness on his infamous client.
“What I went through with Ms. Arias was very traumatic for me, in retrospect. I think my role in the Arias trial, and everything that happened, was the reason cancer infested my body.”
It’s not the first time Nurmi has connected his illness to Arias. After being diagnosed in 2015, he said, “I feared that my death would permit Ms. Arias’s lies to taint my legacy.”
Earlier this month, Arias’s present attorneys, Peg Green and Corey Engle, filed a 324-page appeal on behalf of the imprisoned murderer, asking that her conviction be overturned. The state or Arizona has until January 4, 2019, to respond.
In 2013, a jury found Arias guilty in the death of her on-and-off boyfriend, Travis Alexander. He had been stabbed 27 times, shot once in the head, and had his throat slit. At present, Arias is serving life in prison without the possibility of parole.
