A 14-year-old has been charged as an adult in connection with the horrific rape and murder of his 83-year-old neighbor in Baltimore.
Tyrone Harvin was charged with first-degree murder and rape after allegedly raping and beating Dorothy Mae Neal to death, according to police. Friends and neighbors said that Neal was a familiar face in the neighborhood, where she was often seen walking with her cane to the bus stop. Concerned neighbors alerted police after noticing that they had not seen Neal for a few days. Officers found her unresponsive on August 26 in her apartment in West Baltimore, according to the Baltimore Sun. She later died at the hospital.
“Every homicide is sad and tragic, but when we talk about our vulnerable victims, it just adds a level of tragedy to it. We’re talking about people sometimes who are completely defenseless,” Baltimore Police Department spokesman T.J. Smith said.
Harvin lived on the same street as Neal, according to USA Today.
A woman who did not give her name but identified herself as Harvin’s mother told reporters that her son denied committing the crime. “He’s saying, ‘Mommy, I didn’t do it.’ He said he didn’t do it and I believe what my son say,” she said. According to Fox Baltimore, Harvin has a juvenile record that includes armed robbery back when he was 13 years old. Police said that they found physical evidence that tied Harvin to the attack – and said that there were no signs of forced entry at the crime scene. A court hearing is set for September 19.
