‘I Stole My Dying Daughter’s Pain Meds’: Drug-Addicted Mom Arrested After Confessing To Police

TROY, MO — A Missouri mother has been arrested after admitting to police that she stole pain medications prescribed to her terminally ill daughter — and then took them herself.

Carol Ballweg, 46, was charged Wednesday with four counts of stealing a controlled substance and two counts of abuse of a vulnerable person.

Police say Ballweg was the caregiver for her 20-year-old daughter, who is in hospice care. Medical staff at Troy Family Practice became suspicious after they found bedsores on her daughter. They called police on Monday to report “concerns of neglect and drug abuse related to a patient,” according to authorities.

Worried that she may not be receiving her prescribed doses of fentanyl and oxycodone, staffers tested the patient’s urine. Police say that the urine test showed absolutely no trace of the medications in the patient’s system.

But staff told police that Ballweg repeatedly requested refills ahead of schedule. Police say Ballweg confessed to being addicted to opioids and using the medicine herself.

Her bond has been set at $100,000, and she’s been ordered not to have any contact with her dying daughter.
